How to Hold A Golf Club Properly for Beginners

If you’re new to golf, learning the correct grip is one of the first steps toward improving your game. A proper grip not only helps with control and accuracy but also sets the foundation for a smooth swing. Here’s a simple guide to help you get started.

1. Choose the Right Grip Style
For beginners, there are three main grip styles to consider:
The Overlapping Grip: Place your pinky finger of your trailing hand (the right hand for right-handers) over the gap between the index and middle finger of your lead hand.
The Interlocking Grip: This is similar to the overlapping grip, but instead of resting on top, interlock your trailing hand's pinky with the lead hand's index finger. Many find this grip more secure.
The Ten-Finger Grip: Also known as the “baseball grip,” this grip keeps all fingers on the club, ideal for beginners and those with smaller hands.
2. Position Your Hands
Hold the club with your lead hand first. Place the club in your fingers, not the palm, for a better range of motion. The “V” formed between your thumb and index finger should point towards your trailing shoulder. Then, position your trailing hand on the club, with its thumb wrapping around the handle.
3. Check for Light Pressure
A common mistake is gripping the club too tightly, leading to tension in your hands and arms. Aim for a relaxed grip—firm enough to control the club but loose enough for a fluid swing. A "5 out of 10" pressure level is ideal.
4. Practice!
Spend time practicing your grip at the driving range or even at home. The more comfortable you are with holding the club, the better your swing will feel.
Mastering a good grip takes time but pays off in accuracy and control. Practice regularly, and you’ll soon see the difference in your shots!
